I started a new podcast series with my friend Chrissy Holesovsky, called “Women Have A Place At The Table”. We will be discussing the topic of whether or not women can be called to and function as an elder or pastor, and whether or not women should be allowed to preach or teach or be allowed to function in a role in authority over a man. In Episode 1 we give an introduction to the series and discuss a few scripture verses that are usually brought up when this topic is being talked about.
Titus 1:5-9
5 This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you— 6 if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. 7 For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, 8 but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. 9 He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
1 Timothy 3:1-7
1 The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. 2 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, 5 for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.
1 Peter 5:1-4
1 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
1 Timothy 2:12
I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.

In Episode 2 we look at a few Old Testament scriptures that give us a picture of God having women in authoritative roles. We also start to look at some scriptures in the New Testament alluding to the possibility of God using women in ministry and leadership roles.

In Episode 3 we look at some New Testament epistles that Paul is sent to churches. In these scripture verse we point out and discuss where Paul identifies and commends different women in the New Testament who are functioning in ministry and leadership roles, like deaconess, apostle, pastoring/elder, and hosting and leading a house church community.

In Episode 4 we look at some New Testament scriptures that speak about the gifts that God gives to people and the church, like prophecy, words of knowledge, apostles, pastors or teachers. We point out and discuss that in these sections of scriptures that neither Paul or Peter put any restrictions on women being called and anointed to function in these roles or gifts. Peter even tells us to be good stewards, as individuals and a community, of the gifts God gives us.
1 Peter 4:10-11
10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. What then, brothers (original Greek means both brothers and sisters)? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.

In Episode 5 we look at a few scriptures in which it appears at first read that Paul is contradicting himself. In these scripture verses we bring out and discuss the cultural issues of that time that Paul would have been dealing with to show that Paul was not restricting women at all but providing a pathway for women to learn.
